February 23, 2023
Tonight is going to be a year since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine started.
The OHCHR verified a total of 7,199 civilian deaths during Russia's invasion of Ukraine as of February 12, 2023, including 438 children. 11,756 people were reported to have been injured. The OHCHR reports that the actual number of civilian casualties is likely to be much higher. The numbers are growing daily. Nearly 14,000 children have been abducted by Russian troops and deported to Russia.
My dad chose to stay in Ukraine and never left after the full-scale invasion has began. I visited him in November. We call each other every day.
On January 14 Russian missile hit the residential building that is 40 minutes drive away from my dad's home. The good old friend used to live in that building with his family.
Soon magnolias will bloom again in Maryland. The beauty of the spring seems absurd and misplaced when you are aching on the inside.
